Pets For Seniors: Dog Or Cat

I'm a crazy pet lover and I can't make out a difference between a dog and a cat in the character, lifestyle and so on. But selecting a breed from one of 'em especially for seniors should be tricky. And so today, we are going to talk about it.

Dogs For Seniors

Pets can be of various characteristics, and I suggest you to select the best one which suits them, which is well trained, aggressive to strangers, and loyal. It is best to select a dog of small size as it can be easy to manage, or even some dogs of big size can be good but not every big dogs. I will be discussing more on that later.

Cats For Seniors

Cats can be of any breed, but I would prefer cats with less fur and well trained. Make sure that the cat for seniors should be spayed or it can lead to a great difficulty for them in the future. It totally depends on you whether the cat should be spayed or not. Also make sure that the cats you choose are not obese. We will see some simple solutions for obese cats later.

Best Dogs And Cats For Seniors

Here's a list of dogs and cats, which I would suggest for seniors.

DOGS

Havanese

Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, developed from the now extinct Blanquito de la Habana. The Blanquito descended from the also now-extinct Bichón Tenerife. Havanese looks so cute with all the straight hair covering its eyes too. You can tie its front hair with a bow and it looks just like a plush toy that you get from a local store! The main feature is that it is very gentle to owners. Especially to children.

Height: 23 cm – 27 cm (Breed standard) · 22 cm – 29 cm

Weight: 4.5 kg – 7.3 kg

Lifespan: 14 years – 16 years

Temperament: Affectionate, Companionable, Gentle, Intelligent, Playful, Responsive.

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a breed of domestic dog, bred to be companion dogs. The breed is the result of a cross between Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local ratters in Paris, France, in the 1800s. They are stocky, compact dogs with a friendly, mild-mannered temperament. The French bulldog has only a single short coat. I'm not a big fan of French Bulldog actually, but I have heard that it is very aggressive and alert to strangers. Moreover, its more like a sporty! It has a crazy habit of running a lot.

Lifespan: 8 years – 10 years

Temperament: Affectionate, Playful, Alert, Athletic, Bright, Easygoing, Keen, Lively, Patient, Sociable.

Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso is a non-sporting dog breed originating in Tibet. It was bred as an interior sentinel in the Buddhist monasteries, to alert the monks to any intruders who entered. Lhasa is the capital city of Tibet, and apso is a word from the Tibetan language. There is some debate over the exact origin of the name; some claim that the word "apso" is an anglicized form of the Tibetan word for goatee or perhaps "ra-pho" meaning "billy goat". It may also be a compound noun meaning "bark-guard". I have had an  experience with a Lhasa Apso recently as my friend got one. Its a furry one and gentle too. But unfortunately they had to shave its fur off  because it had a crazy roll on a muddy puddle and it was so muddy! Well, you can imagine how a full, clean shaved, Lhasa Apso would look like.

  • Height: 27 cm (American kennel club breed standard, Male) · 25 cm – 28 cm
  • Weight: 5.4 kg – 6.4 kg (American kennel club breed standard, Female) · 6 kg – 7 kg · 6.4 kg – 8.2 kg (American kennel club breed standard, Male)
  • Lifespan: 12 years – 15 years on average
  • Temperament: Alert, Assertive, Devoted, Energetic, Fearless, Friendly, Intelligent, Lively, Obedient, Playful, Spirited, Steady

CATS

Well for cats I don't have a specific suggestion because most of the cats are the same except for maybe some. Well, here are some top picks of some by me which I would prefer! Lately, I had been really interested with cats and rescuing them too. I have seen so many acts being thrown away. Maybe because of health issue or something, but I know that most of them had been getting over their disease and it now having a perfect, loving, caring new home. Abandoning a cat or dog or any animal which you have taken care of and is abandoning because of its health is the worst thing that you do to creature. And you can never regret it and you will be thinking, worrying about it later. If you have any creature who is suffering from any health issue, take it to the vet and do as much as you can and give it a good new live with a good new owner, if you can't or don't want you to have it. Please do not abandon it!

Siamese Cat

The Siamese cat is one of the first distinctly recognized breeds of Asian cat. Derived from the Wichianmat landrace, one of several varieties of cat native to Thailand, the original Siamese became one of the most popular breeds in Europe and North America. This is one of my favorite breeds from cats as the Siamese has got a different view to their owners. I they are so affectionate and loyal to their owners. I have read an article about one and it was so amazing. It describes about a Siamese cat [ whose name I have forgotten by chance ] does not drink water from the bowl of the other two cats who share like brothers! And that is one specialty about Siamese Cat. They need a special, private bowl for food as well as for water!

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is the largest domesticated cat breed. It has a distinctive physical appearance and valuable hunting skills. It is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the US state of Maine, where it is the official state cat. I literally love Maine Coon because of its ears and furs. They are so beautiful!

Ragdoll

The Ragdoll is a cat breed with a color point coat and blue eyes. They are large and muscular semi-longhair cats with a soft and silky coat.

I love Ragdoll a lot because of its silky smooth fur as I have mentioned before. It takes time to clean its fur but its worth it!
